"The Nightshade Council"

Hey there, it's been a while! I've had a busy year working as a graphic designer for the past 12 or so months, and it's nice to slow down for a tick and to get back to drawing, and some of my personal studies — thought I'd share a little peek of what I'm working on.

For this piece, The Nightshade Council, I chose to focus on pansies, magpie ink-caps, and most specifically bats. Did you know that bats, who are not blind in fact, are able to tell you apart from me just by the differences in how we breathe? And though generally feared in the Western world, they're often considered to be good luck in many other cultures across the globe. Another interesting thing is that in a healthy ecosystem, bats are pest controllers and pollinators. Like bees — essentially, they literally are putting food on our tables for us to eat.... The darker side of the coin is, in environments where habitats have been destroyed from excessive deforestation (i.e. no place to roost, no presence of fungi/plants = no detoxifiers), disease runs rampant, and the bats become nature's little helper in restoring balance.
